Is Perplexity safe for business use?
On Enterprise plans, Perplexity says your data is not used for training. On Free, Pro and Max, training is on by default, and Perplexity says data collected before you opt out can’t be removed. For anything about a client, use Enterprise, or keep the question free of identifying detail.

What Perplexity does with your data, plan by plan
Free, Pro, Max
Yes, unless you turn it off
The "AI data retention" setting is enabled by default, which allows your data to be used for AI training. Turn it off in Account settings > Preferences. Opting out only covers data collected afterward. Source (opens in a new tab)
- How long it is kept
- Personal information is kept while the account is active and removed from Perplexity servers within 30 days of account deletion.
- Admin controls
- None. Individual accounts, and the training opt-out applies per user.
Enterprise Pro and Enterprise Max
No
Perplexity says Enterprise data is never used for AI training and that agreements with outside model providers such as OpenAI and Anthropic prevent retention and training on Enterprise data. Source (opens in a new tab)

Our take
For a firm of 15 to 200 people
Fine for public research on any plan. Anything that names a client belongs on Enterprise. Note that custom retention needs 50 or more seats, which most firms of this size won’t have.
This is our reading of the facts above, not a rating. We have no product to sell and take no referral fee from any vendor.
