Is Zoom AI Companion safe for client meetings?
Zoom says it does not use meeting content to train AI models. Some features send content to outside models from Anthropic and OpenAI, which Zoom says do not keep it beyond limited safety exceptions. Participants see a notice when transcription is on. Check which features are enabled on your account.

Zoom Workplace accounts (Zoom AI features, previously named AI Companion)
No
Zoom says it does not use customer audio, video, chat, screen sharing, attachments, or similar communications content to train its own or third-party AI models. Source (opens in a new tab)
- How long it is kept
- Content follows the retention period of the related Zoom service, and customers can set custom periods for some content. Admins can generate meeting summaries without keeping a transcript.
- Admin controls
- Admins enable or disable each AI feature at account or group level and can lock settings. They can redact personal data from summaries, block patterns with regular expressions, and show custom disclaimers.
Where your data is stored
Zoom processes and stores data based on the account's hosted data center region and settings. Accounts hosted in the EU or Australia use third-party models on dedicated Amazon Bedrock instances, or Zoom-hosted models only.

What to watch for
In Zoom's federated approach, some AI features send content to third-party models from Anthropic and OpenAI. Zoom offers 2 other deployment options with fewer features; customers ask Zoom support which applies to them.
Source (opens in a new tab)Third-party model providers do not retain customer content, with limited exceptions for trust and safety. Turning off transcript retention does not stop participants or third parties from keeping their own transcripts.
Source (opens in a new tab)When My Notes is on, each participant sees a banner saying the meeting is being transcribed, unless they earlier chose not to show it again.
Source (opens in a new tab)Zoom's documentation now calls these features Zoom AI and says they were previously named AI Companion.

Our take
For a firm of 15 to 200 people
A reasonable choice if you already run on Zoom. Ask Zoom which model deployment your account uses, and decide who is allowed to start AI features in a meeting with a client in it.
This is our reading of the facts above, not a rating. We have no product to sell and take no referral fee from any vendor.
