Tools and connectors

If I connect a tool, does the AI get free rein to read everything in it?

Short answer

Connecting a tool doesn’t give the AI free rein: it reads what you point it at, when you ask, within the permissions you already have in that tool. It isn’t scanning or storing the whole mailbox. What a connector can do, as opposed to see, is a separate setting.

Why people ask

That clicking “connect” hands over the whole inbox and every folder to a company they have never dealt with.

The longer answer

A connector acts as you. It can reach what you can reach, and nothing more. If you can’t open a folder, neither can it.

It also acts when asked. It fetches the thread or the file you referred to. It isn’t reading everything in the background.

The details differ by assistant and by plan, including who is allowed to switch connectors on. The register’s connector pages set out what each one can see and do.

Where AI falls short

This question was asked out loud in a working session and logged without a name or a company.
