What it can’t do · asked at more than one firm

Why does it solve my problem sometimes and completely miss other times?

Short answer

When AI is inconsistent, the cause is almost always the context it was given. Cold, it guesses how your firm works. Given a map of it, it reasons. That map is usually a document nobody has written yet: how the process runs, what the terms mean, and what a good result looks like.

Why people ask

That it is unreliable in a way they can’t predict, so they can’t build anything on it.

The longer answer

When it works, you probably gave it more than you realized: the background, an example, the format you wanted. When it misses, it was filling gaps with a plausible guess.

The fix is to write the gaps down once. That document is most of what makes a build dependable, and it is useful to the people on the team as well.

Where AI falls short

This question was asked out loud in a working session and logged without a name or a company. It was asked at more than one firm, independently.
